It is believed that you can be a villain or a hero. Now, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain again for Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. A formidable antagonist. The plot follows the comic-book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is returning. There’s, of course, the hilarious wacky humor that is exclusive to director Taika Waititi. And yet, Love and Thunder, while being a great standalone film, does not quite live up to the previous Thor instalment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a major element of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade now and his films that stand on their own are either not hitting the target or failed to hit the mark completely. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a terrible entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a good start. In the end, everyone’s list of the top five MCU films should contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) with a definite. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika waititi collaboration was a sign that expectations were sky-high ahead of the film’s release.
Gorr (Bale) Gorr (Bale), god who seeks to exterminate all gods, is a god who strikes New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining forces with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi) and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend and now Mighty Thor. The story is easy to follow, unlike recent Marvel movies and the performances are excellent in the film. Hemsworth is the main character, who is suffering from an emotional crisis in his midlife. However, Bale as well as Portman are outstanding. The opening credits sequence the extent to which Bale is able to do. Gorr could have been the new Thanos in the MCU. Bale adds a some eerieness to his character , but it’s not much more than that.
On the other on the other hand, Portman, who makes her return to the Marvel world after having been absent from the last two Thor films, will play the cancer-stricken ex-girlfriend selected by Mjolnir. Marvel is keen to hand the mantles of Hawkeye and Hulk to female characters. I had hoped that the Mighty Thor would be similar to the representation checklist. The film tells an emotional story about the astrophysicist, who can show her biceps in more scenes than one.
Marvel is known for its own flexing too, through all the cameos that are in the film. In addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy team We also have Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor as well as Thor. We also get Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of an Asgardian play in the respective roles. Waititi who, as of Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, returns to his most loved genre, this time. There are hilarious scenes like two goats that are loud Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory Thor making leg-splits, or Valkyrie posing as the ambassador of Old Spice…
There’s also the recurring gag of Thor looking for his Mjolnir, but being scared of Stormbreaker’s jealousy. These gags are hilarious, however they’re also a source of intense emotion. They also reveal the weak plot. Thor: Love and Thunder covers a wide range of love, from a father-daughter bond to the complicated relationship between lovers who have fallen out… There’s parallels between Gorr losing his faith in his god, Rapu, and Thor getting disillusioned by Zeus (played by Russell Crowe). These concepts are endless however…
Like always, there are plenty of easter eggs and even callbacks to films like Interstellar and Harry Potter. We see a glimpse of the god of death, Falligar, taken straight from comics. We see Hemsworth wearing the first Thor costume that comic-book readers recognize. While fighting Zeus, Thor reveals his true colours. We also see a tattoo saying ‘RIP Loki which has the costume of the trickster etched on our Viking’s back. The evil Necrosword is introduced and it’s interesting to see the different weapons shown that can control people, given that Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own minds.
We saw this the ten rings of ShangChi along with Ms. Marvel’s amazing bangle and the Ebony blade during the Eternals post-credits scene. Following the recent Marvel show, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but will never empower you” feels relatable. There’s even a story of Valkyrie losing her beloved girlfriend in the war and Korg becoming a lover of another Kronan man.
We’re reminded of Ragnarok’s color palette in the beginning half, but most of the second half is set in the dark world of black and white. Action scenes that are monochrome can be very satisfying however, it’s important to keep in mind.
Hemsworth as Thor will be here for a long time though, and that’s great news for MCU fans who have seen the first Avengers or sacrifice their lives or hang their boots.
